Description
Photographic print (b/w); albumen print, 'The well (Hougomont)'; man looking at remains of a well within farm. Trees and fields in background, Hougomont, 1882-1885. In June 1815, the farm was the epicenter for the fighting in the Battle of Waterloo. In his 1862 novel 'Les Misérables', Victor Hugo describes how 300 bodies were thrown down a well at Hougoumont, creating a popular myth about the well pictured. To this day no archaeological evidence of human remains has been found.
