British trench periscope from World War 1, enabling the user to observe from behind cover.The object lens at the top is covered by a leather lens cap retained by a strap. The eyepiece with protective rubber rim can be focussed on the object of interest. At the base is provision for attaching the periscope to a tripod, bringing the eyepiece to the users height and allowing the heavy instrument to be revolved easily.
