Pacific Star
Accession Number NWHRM : 5177.1
Description
1939-45 Pacific Star medal awarded to Arthur Henry Broom, still in its original packing and box. Pte Broom became a Far East Prisoner of War in February 1942 on the surrender of Singapore whilst serving with the 4th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment. He had suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm. He recovered, but was sent overland to work on the railway construction 31st October 1942. The Pacific Star was one of three medals awarded to those who served in this campaign, the others being the 1939-45 Star and the British War Medal. Pte Broom died soon after the War on May 11th 1947 aged 27. Like many other ex-FEPOWs, his health was permanently damaged by his wartime experience. He is buried in All Saints Churchyard, Horsford, Norfolk. The box is addressed to his Father, Walter Harold Broom. They are pristine because they were never mounted or worn. The medals were donated to the Museum by his brother in 1995.
