Kaiser Wilhelm II ruled over a Germany which still recognised individual land or state armies. Helmet plates and belt buckles carried different symbols and mottoes, "Furchtlos und Treu", Fearless and True, being Wurttemberg's. This belt provided an ideal way of recording events and passing time. Long periods of boredom was often part of a soldier's life. Private King sustained a gunshot wound in the right shoulder in December 1917 and was sent to hospital in Britain.
