Accession Number NWHRM : 3990.20

Description

Photographic print (b/w); view of men, tanks and camels in desert area near Gaza 1917. Two Mark IV female tanks (only machine guns, no 6 pounder guns). Their names, 'Lady Wingate' and 'Revenge', are painted on the side. With a third named 'Sir ReginaldI' they were brought to the Middle East to replace Mark I tanks lost in the second battle of Gaza, April 1917. This brought the number available back to eight. Pairs of tanks were allocated to each Infantry brigade for the third battle of Gaza, 2nd November 1917. The speed of the British advance after the battle and the nature of the country meant tanks were not used there again and Major Nutt's detachment from E Company, the Tank Corps, was withdrawn for service on the Western Front.
