A scroll was sent with each memorial plaque. The wording was long debated with suggestions coming from Rudyard Kipling and Sir Henry Newbolt amongst others. However the suggestion from The Provost of King's College Cambridge, Dr Montegue James was finally adopted. The woodblock from which they were printed was cut by artists attached to the LCC Central School of Art & Crafts, and the name, rank and regiment of each man was written in red or blue by a calligrapher.
