Sheet 44/R; Sheet 44/S
Accession Number NWHRM : 3815
Description
A double-sided, grid, coloured silk map of Korea created in 1944. The first side, Sheet 44/R concerns the areas of Hopeh, Shantung, N. Honan, N. Kiangsu, and E. Shangsi. The bottom right corner contains a reference guide detailing geographical landmarks, towns and villages, heights, railways, international and provincial boundaries, roads, and other important landmarks. Underneath the reference is a scale ratio of 1: 1,000,000 and three scales for conversions of kilmetres, nautical miles, and miles. Therefore, it shows 1 millimetre to 1 kilometre, 1 inch to approximately 14 nautical miles, and 1 inch to approximately 16 miles. The flip side, Sheet 44/S is titled Chosun (Korea) and subsequently details both North and South Korea. The bottom right corner also contains a reference guide, multiple measuring scales, and an altitude tint scale. These two maps were part of the '44 Series conducted by MI 9 in London to give the ground coverage of Southeast Asia.
