The first German airship raid on Great Britain occurred on the night of 19th January 1915. Two airships traversed North Norfolk, bombing Hunstanton, Sheringham, Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn. Civilians were killed and wounded. The British government responded by instituting defences against air attack. Aeroplanes were based at airfields near the coast. Bacton became the headquarters for units of lorry-mounted anti-aircraft guns and searchlights which could rush to places Zeppelins had been seen. These fragments of a downed airship prove the effectiveness of such measures.
