Description
Afghan sword brought from Cabul in 1880 by Lieutenant Colonel W. Daunt 2/9th Foot . One of the weapons brought back by the 2nd Battalion of the Ninth Foot after the end of the Second Afghan War in 1880 when they were part of the relief force. 'Khyber Knife' is the name given to it by the British forces fighting on the North West Frontier against various tribal groups who used this weapon, including the Mahsud, Pathans, Afridis & Waziris. 2 bone/ivory grips secured with 4 rivets in a rectangular pattern, short gilt metal covering towards the shoulder. At the top, the ivory has a beak shape pointing towards the cutting edge.
