Read MoreGas respirator, German
In the Second World War the German Army continued their First War practice of fitting the anti-gas filter directly to the face mask. Though this made it slightly heavy, it avoided the need for a tube leading to a box respirator carried on the chest as with the British mask. The complete German mask slid into the sheet-metal container which was corrugated for extra strength. This could be carried in various positions according to the soldier's role. The cartoonist, Jon, depicted his 'Two Types' - British officers in the desert army - using a captured container to hold the tea and sugar for their next 'brew up'.
