This dress was lovingly passed down through the generations before being donated to the museum, and was worn by various members of the donors' family throughout the years. This is likely in part due to the dress' sublime quality - taffeta is known as an extremely luxurious fabric. First made in Attabiya, Baghdad in the 12th century, taffeta is an extremely adaptable fabric which can be soft or stiff. It is mainly known for its sheen, as can be seen in the photograph. Taffeta remains a popular fabric today among the elite - many of the dresses worn on the red carpet are made of taffeta.
