Thor's hammer amulet

Accession Number NWHCM : 2005.721

Description

Silver and gold Late Saxon (Viking) Thor's hammer amulet; the pendant is cast in the form of a double-headed hammer with two short ends and a slim rounded-square-section shaft, the suspension loop of which is now broken. The head is decorated with an incised ladder-pattern edge but particularly stands out because of the central decoration which consists of a sheet or section of gold inserted into the silver head. This gold is elaborated with an asymmetrical filigree decoration consisting of a central stem with ring base over which extends an inverted U-shape parabola of filigree, terminating in 'flicks', each containing a gold pellet. On either side of this are two shorter curved lengths of filigree wire with gold pellets.
