This hoard that this axe comes from contains just four bronze ‘flanged’ axes. Three are typical of this form of axe, which was characteristic of that period in Britain. They each exhibit a widely splayed and rounded blade and all are decorated with delicate flecking below the blade. However, this fourth axe is very different in appearance. At 240mm, it measures twice the length of the others. It has a less-pronounced and flattened blade and also has a deliberate notch in the narrow end. This is a continental form of Middle-Late Bronze Age axe and was manufactured at Langquaid in Germany.
