'Clicker' quilt

Accession Number NWHCM : 1992.127

Description

Patchwork bedcover; white cotton, made up of crazy patchwork shapes taken from shoe patterns in white calico, outlined with red feather stitching (faded to pink). The shapes resemble that cut out of pieces of leather for shoes, to minimise wastage. Linen was used as a lining material for shoes; therefore factory offcuts could have been used as a source for the material.

This bedcover is a prime example of the need to recycle and reuse objects in the interwar years. The unusual pattern here is due to the material's original use. The shapes resemble that of cut out pieces of leather for shoes and would have been reused here to minimise wasteage. Linen was used as a lining material for shoes, and it is therefore likely that the material was sourced from factory offcuts. Calico itself is a cheap fabric, less course than denim but not as soft as muslin. The bedcover was made by a Mrs Scott for domestic use, perfectly demonstrating the contemporary national outlook of 'reuduce, reuse, recycle' which has had a resurgence in recent years.
