Very few archaeological objects can be directly associated with a known historical event occurring as long as 2,000 years ago. This fragment of bronze was once part of the statue of the Roman Emperor Claudius, which stood outside his temple, at the Roman town of Colchester. It provides a direct link with the traumatic destruction of the town by Boudica’s army, as the whole of East Anglia ignited into rebellion against the Romans.
