Shoe-making has been synonymous with Norwich for over 700 years. The city was once famed for its high quality ladies and childrens shoes, with companies like Start-rite and Norvic becoming household names. At its peak, there were 26 factories, employing 12,000 people and in 1961 a staggering eight million pairs of shoes were made in the citys factories. This exhibition shoe made by Harry William Morris in 1926 was designed to show off the exceptional craftsmanship of the maker through its orange, blue and yellow embroidery and gold leather decoration.
