Description

Fancy dress costume, dress with bodice made of a Union flag with a navy and white sailor collar, and skirt with triangular pieces of coloured fabric applied as bunting, white cotton sailor hat with red, white and blue hat band. Probably made for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the style of the skirt is similar to the fashionable shape of the early 1950s. A fancy dress costume, this dress consists of a bodice made of a Union Jack flag, with a navy and white sailor collar, combined with a skirt made from triangular pieces of coloured fabric applied as bunting. The skirt is early 1950s in style, with the bunting shapes probably coming from a dressmaker's fabric scrapbox.

This dress was likely made for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the first ever televised coronation, prompting mass celebration throughout the UK. An average of 17 people crammed around each television set in order to watch history happen, and many citizens continued the celebrations in with their neighbours in mass street parties, where costumes such as this wouldn't have been unusual.
