dress

Accession Number NWHCM : 1967.551.8

Description

Dress in white muslin with silver thread embroidered dots in diapered pattern. It has a low stomacher front, a medium high waist and two front pieces that wrap over like a shawl. Silver cord trimmings feature on the back of the bodice. The sleeves are elbow length and close fitting with loose, self-fabric epaulettes which suggest a date of 1800. They have muslin frills but these may be a later addition as this dress has been much altered. The bodice and sleeves are lined with linen which extends to form an underbodice. The skirt is pleated and and gathered at the back and has a narrow horizontal tuck above the hem and a slight train. The upper part of the skirt is slit down the sides and gathered onto a self-fabric band. About1800 to 1805. There is a child's dress in the collection (1967.551.9) that is made of matching fabric.
