The dress was made in 1873 and is a slightly old fashioned style for its date. It was made and worn by Maria Cooke, the donor's mother, after her first choice of a white muslin wedding dress was rejected by the bride's father Charles Cook. Charles was a local silk weaver, possibly at Clabburn and Crisp, and was insistent that his daughter should be married in Norwich silk. Maria married Walter Waller in June 1873.
