Description

Doll, bust of wax, long brown/auburn hair, slashed in all over head, yellow wax, brown blown glass eyes inset, one eye missing, inset lids and hair lashes, bright red down turned mouth, redened nostrils and unpierced flattened ears, round head and wide squarish shoulders, right leg broken, lower limbs wax showing fine detail, toes, elbows, wrists etc, attached to cloth upper limbs, triple pierced arms; body canvas stuffed with horsehair, body shaped modified later, waist bound with cloth, tucks taken in at hips; clothes include white cotton chemise and pantalettes, waist flannel petticoat, starched petticoat, blue dress, spotted muslin pinafore, straw hat, cotton stockings, black leather slippers, one missing; marks E on shoe, mark of John Edwards, London 1856 to 1885, maker of Royal baby dolls, about 1870 to 1880; given to a child who was born in 1861. Change of clothes, including green skirt and ribbon, and white blouse with black bolero.
