The soft brown, grey and silvery colours, the shaft of light falling on the gently cascading willow, and the smoothness of the water combine to give this painting a sense of great calm and tranquillity. Crome's control of light and atmosphere and selection of subject is particularly reminiscent of the work of the Dutch artist Jan van Goyen. The scene is based on a sketch from 1806 called View from King's Head Gardens at Thorpe, identifying the location as the King's Head pub on the Yarmouth Road at Thorpe St Andrew, to the east of Norwich.
Crome trained as a coach and sign-painter. This picture is painted on a re-used wooden coach door. Infrared imaging revealed a lion in a crest painted beneath.
