Cotman's only visit to Domfront in August 1820 was probably one of the most eventful weeks of all his Normandy tours. He endured torrential rain and spectacular storms, and on the third night hurricane force winds which blew down 'Chimnies, logs, & heavy masses continually falling & glass, rattling to atoms everywhere' (letter to Dawson Turner, Mortain, 26 Aug 1820, BM). A final ignominy was to spend his last night under arrest, falsely accused of being involved in a conspiracy in Paris.
