Description
Cushion, stumpwork, with edging and fringe displayed in a glass and wood case. Worked to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662 by a member of the Buxton family and donated by Maud Buxton in 1937.

This 17th century cushion is decorated in a style of embroidery known as stumpwork where figures and details are raised from the surface to produce a three dimensional effect. It was created to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662. A union that brought Tangiers and Bombay under British control as part of her dowry.
