Odobenus rosmarus
Accession Number NWHCM : 1898.51.FC186
Description
Fossil, Odobenus rosmarus (walrus) skull, maxilla, premaxilla, lacrimal bone and orbit - the cranium and frontal bones are missing. The canine alveoli (sockets) are very large (65 mm in diameter) and so indicate that this animal may have been a male. The canine alveoli are empty but the roots of the postcanines are still in their sockets. The size of the specimen again indicates that it was probably male and was quite a mature animal. The specimen was dredged from the North Sea and is encrusted with barnacles and bryozoa.
