This carved marble head of Bacchus likely dates from the 1st century AD although it may possibly be a later copy, the God is shown wearing a large vine wreath and is mounted on a wooden base. Bacchus was the Roman name for the God the Greeks knew as Dionysis, he represented amongst things: wine, merry making, the theatre and the grape harvest.
