Description

Handwritten document of 4 sheets of paper pinned together, written by Walter Dexter circa August / September 1914, titled 'Ypres by Walter Dexter RBA' describing his previous visit to Ypres, Belgium in the early 1900s. He describes the Medieval architecture of the town as well as his fears for its survival following the invasion of Belgium by German troops. The document is probably a draft for an article written for the Lynn News and Advertiser, possibly titled 'Sketches of Famous Cities of Belgium'. This is a very poignant description since the Medieval town of Ypres (now Ieper) was to be totally destroyed by shelling in the First World War
