This beautifully painted sign vividly showcases the fruit, vegetable and flowers sold by Taylor’s seeds, a Norfolk business that traded for over 200 years. Founded by John Marshall at St Germans, Norfolk in 1770, the business moved to Purfleet Street, Kings Lynn in 1800. It became known as Taylor’s in 1849 when John Taylor, previously apprenticed to John Marshall’s son Thomas, took over the business following his death. Following a move to Norfolk Street in 1855 the shop continued trading until its closure in 1982 with a mobile shop continuing to sell seeds and tools from a van until 1997. An example of a traditional seed shop reminiscent of Taylor’s has been reconstructed on Village Row at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse and was opened in 2013 by family members.
