plaster relief mural

Accession Number CRRMU : 1997.8

Description

Plaster relief mural of Cromer East Beach by J. Moray-Smith, 1951; a slightly fanciful scene crowded with people on the sands and in the water, with boats and a steamer in the background; architectural accuracy not 100% but the figures are very well executed; has a rather pre-war feel about it

This mural is one of three which were formerly in the Ship Hotel, Cromer but removed by the breweery when it was sold out of the trade in the 1980s. The brewery placed the portrait of Henry Blogg in the White Horse but retained the others for its ofices in King Street, Norwich. When the brewery changed hands one of the murals depicting a 19th century lifeboat launch went to Gressenhall, while the Cromer scene went to the offices of Phoenix Inns. When that office was closed, it was offered to the Cromer Museum and immediately put on display. The mural has been cleaned and repainted since it was photographed in the Ship and put on a postcard (CRRMU : 1981.80.309) and is probably a lot brighter than it was originally. This is verified by comparison of the photograph and the mural. Many people remember it being rather dark and brown as a result of tobacco smoke.
