Description

Sheave; stout wooden slice, cut across the grain and drilled with a hole in the centre; the outer circumference has a weakly formed groove all around it; the wood appears to be very dense (lignum vitae) and partly mineralised, worn at the corners, with shrinkage cracks developed on drying; from a block used in the rigging of ships and boats, mid 19th century or earlier
