fisherman's gansey

Accession Number CRRMU : 1986.2

Description

David Cooper's gansey; traditional, hand-knitted in the round, 10 stitches per inch, fisherman's jumper with a yoke pattern of three columns of Betty Martin, separated by either upward pointing or downward pointing chevrons, which sometimes come together to make a chequerboard effect, the effect is to make a subtle texture rather than a bold pattern, the buttons of organic materials, ie mother of pearl and query jet rather than plastic suggest a rather early date for the gansey, almost certainly it is pre-War (1939)
